The goal of mediation is for people in conflict to communicate in a structured process facilitated by a neutral mediator. Rather than imposing a solution, a professional mediator works with parties in dispute to explore their issues and underlying interests.
The mediator is impartial throughout the process and will facilitate the communication between the participants using the structure and process.
Mediation is confidential and it gives the parties the chance to agree terms. The parties must voluntarily agree to mediate and they must also agree voluntarily to any settlement agreement. A settlement agreement is a legally binding contract.
A mediator supports parties to identify, clarify and explore issues, to generate and consider options and to make decisions about future actions and outcomes.
